Level of significance The level of significance of a test of hypothesis is the probability of rejecting the Ho when it is true. This probability is known as alpha, and it is called a Type I error. The smaller the value of alpha the better since the chances of making a mistake by rejecting a true null are minimized. The significance level is set in practice to levels of 1% to 10%.
