Terrain

The terrain in the vicinity of NAS Pensacola is relatively flat, thus it generates few orographic effects. Weather conditions are significantly affected by bodies of water in the local area. Pensacola Bay flanks the station from the northeast through southwest. The Garcon Swamp wetlands cover the southwest through northwest, and the Pensacola metropolitan area lies along a line from northwest through northeast. The Gulf of Mexico lies 1.5 nm to the south beyond two barrier islands: Santa Rosa Island to the southeast and Perdido Key to the southwest. These islands form a natural breakwater for Pensacola Bay.
