Turbulence

Turbulence is the irregular and instantaneous motion of air that is comprised of numerous small of eddies traveling in the general air current. Atmospheric turbulence is caused by random fluctuations in the wind flow. It can be caused by thermal or convective currents, or differences in terrain and wind speed.

There are several sources of turbulence in our area. Downbursts associated with thunderstorms lead to turbulence. The sea breeze shifts between the northwest and the southwest reducing transient turbulence.

The most worrisome turbulence is generated around fronts in winter. These often take the form of low level thermals from the surface to 5000ft.

Aviation Digital is a tool to find out about turbulence. Aviation Digital provides PiReps about turbulence (and other factors) that might be encountered.

Clear air turbulence is difficult to detect.
